I Have Had Pain In My Knee For Several Months.

I have had pain in my knee for several months. I recently saw my ortho. surgeon who ordered a MRI, which revealed a defect in the cartilage behind my kneecap, which caused holes to form in my kneecap. He first tried a shot to lubricate the joint and relieve the pain. Unfortunately it only worked for a short time. Surgery is the next option. What does the surgery entail? I am told my leg will be immobilized for 6 weeks and I will be required to either use a walker or crutches.
