I have performance anxiety in group settings, and I will be beginning graduate school in about 10 days. During my last year in college and for the 3 years I worked (4 years altogether), I was prescribed Propranolol 10 mg as needed. Depending on the situation, I typically have taken anywhere from 2 mg (meetings) to 20 mg (presentations), and I would take this medication less than once a week. I think now I will be taking this medication more frequently in graduate school, since the class size will be much smaller and I may need to speak more frequently. I expect I will be taking on average 5 mg a day for no more than 4 or 5 days a week (not on weekends, and only when I have classes). I am worried about the prospect of weight gain. I am 25 years old, 5'2, 117 pounds, work-out about 3 days a week, and eat relatively healthy. Online, I have read accounts of weight gain (some "dramatic"), but I feel like many of these people were taking at LEAST 40 mg a day (often I saw 80 mg), and were in middle-age. What is the likelihood of someone with my profile and dosage gaining weight? During the past 8 years of my life, my weight hasn't fluctuated that much, ranging from 112 to 117.
