I Have Scoliosis And Am 47 Years Old. I Grew

I have scoliosis and am 47 years old. I grew up with scoliosis and when I reached 16 they released me from treatment with a 30 degree curve. Recently Icould tell my back was getting worse. Ten months ago I went in for a check up and it was at 36 degrees. I went back in for another check up last week, ten months later and my curve had progressed 25 degrees to 55 degrees. Now the doc suggest surgery. I was wondering what in the hell would cause such rapid deterioration of my curve at my age.
