I recently was diagnosed with an invasive breast cancer (type 2 tumor) in my right breast. I tested positive for the PALB2 gene mutation, so I opted for the bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. A few weeks after the operation and into my reconstruction my surgeon calls and says that the margins of the tumor were clear, lymph nodes clear but that there was DCIS which he was unaware of before surgery and that there may still be some left. I've been recommended 28 days of radiation possibly followed by tamoxifen. Is this over treatment? What is the likelihood of the DCIS becoming an invasive cancer? And even if it does wouldn't I be looking at radiation at that time? I guess what I mean to say is should I wait until radiation is absolutely necessary, considering the possible side effects?
