I was diagnosed with PBC in 2010. Was put on URSO and all my lfts came down within the normal range and have stayed that way except for bilirubin within the last year or so went one point over normal range. In 2010 an endoscopy showed 4 medium sized varices. Now, in 2018, my varices two years ago were large but with no welts. My doctor didn't do the banding because I was progressing so slowly, I suppose. Question: Since my lfts have remained with normal range all these years and I have taken very good care of myself, diet, exercise, etc, why have my varices gotten larger? My liver must be more cirrhotic or the portal hypertension wouldn't have gone up. But none of this is revealed in my lfts. How do I know what stage of cirrhosis I am actually at? I don't have ascities, no puritus, only the varices and my memory is very poor due to circulating toxins, I suppose. My doctor says my liver is doing well. I eat well, still, nothing else much has changed. But being on the brink of a variceal bleed is NOT doing well, so why does she tell me I am doing well? I'd rather she was more straightforward with me. Tell it like it is. What do you say?
