If A Pt In Acute A-fib Is Not Responding To

If a pt in acute a-fib is not responding to the IV Amiodarone protocol over 48 hour period and cardioversion unsuccessful, what is the next recommended mode of treatment? The patient cannot get scheduled for ablation until May 31. The patient is still symptomatic. Why wouldn't a pacemaker at this point be recommended before the pt has complications of prolonged afib w/ a rvr?
