I'm Gonna Start By Saying Every Part Of This Question

I'm gonna start by saying every part of this question pertains to a story I am currently writing. So it's complete fiction. But my question is really just to make sure I am medically correct in thinking that this is possible.
In the story, I had a character be stabbed in the back. The knife used had punctured a lung. So obviously this character is suffocating. But I'm not going to have him die, so I was wondering if it were possible, if someone were to put the knife back into the wound would it at the very least slow down suffocation?
