Four years ago I went to a endocrinologist after I suffered from fainting spells and chronic fatigue. He recommended that I take 12.5 idodine a daily. When I started taking it, I was no longer tired or fainting. However, he never told me if I had hypothyroidism or why he suggested I take it. Now I am hearing about all the dangers of iodine excess. I tried to stop taking it for a couple weeks but felt like I gained weight and was tired again. Any suggestions? Could I maybe be in need of a thyroid hormone replacement instead?
hello dear thanks for your query at HCM weight gain and tiredness can be due to changes in thyroid hormone levels. iodine excess in take can produce defects in proper thyroid production. my recommendations are get thyroid profile done , visit endocrinologist for further investigation and management. thyroid hormone replacement cannot be commented just on physical symptoms , thyroid profile should be abnormal with clinical hypothyroid features. it could be best judged by endocrinologist. regards
