Infant Having Ear Infection, Outer Ears Red With Bumps, Applied Cream, No Relief. What Could Be It?

My 23 month old has had 8 ear infections since he was around 9 months old til about 13 months old. He had tubes put in at 13 months and hasn't had any problems until yesterday when he came home from daycare and both outer ears were very red, with some bumps and warm to the touch. We applied Benadryl cream and they were better next morning and then this afternoon one of his ears was perfectly normal and the other seemed more red and swollen and he constantly keeps rubbing it. He has been in a great mood and hasn't been fussy.. What could this be?

Hello,
Get his ears examined by ENT specialist and get done Impedance audiometry to see for the condition of middle part of ear .This test can only be done if there are no tubes in the ears.
As the tubes may come out automatically and then the child has developed the same condition again so get them examined first and then the test.
If there is fluid behind the ears then his might be constantly rubbing his ears because of itching.
As he has a previous history of grommet insertion there are more chances of getting it.
