Infant Having Persistent Cough. Can I Give Her An Expectorant? Lungs Are Clear
Hello Dr My 21-month-old daughter has been having some almost persistent cough for the last while while she has been teething . It gets worse at night and she wakes up choking on her drooling as she cannot spit it out. I d love to get a subscription for say a mixture that is an expectorant - simply to get the drool stuck in her throat out ; her lungs are clear for sure- but definitely not anti-tussive - coughing is simply her natural body response to get rid of the drooling. Thanking you in advance.
Hello
Thanks for the query
You are absolutely right that coughing is a protective response. That's why cough suppresent are not recommended in children. After any infection whether it is viral or bacterial cough takes time to subside, even when all other symptoms subside. I hope your child has been immunised for pertussis. Give her
Azithromycin syp. (100mg/5 ml ) 5 ml once a day empty stomach for 3 days , ambrodil-s syp 2.5 ml thrice a day for 5-7 days and Zinc syp. 5 ml a day for 14 days.
