Infant Not Taking Food, Loose Motions. Suggested Nomigyl Syrup With No Benefit. Purpose Of Motion Test?

Hi, my niece is 20 months old. She is not taking any food content from past 1 months and having frequent loose motions. She always prefers to have only milk. One of the doctor suggested Normigyl syrup for cure of loose motions but there is no use. Doctor even suggested to have motion test. Can you please let me know why do they conduct motion test. Thanks in advance.

hi..
your niece has frequent diarrhea, and child is put on norflox and metronidazole..
your pediatrician has suggested stool examination, this is done for knowing the pathologic agent/microorganism causing diarrhea and it becomes easy for the treatment.. this stool test also gives an idea of noninfective causes of diarrheal diseases...
follow the instruction of your pediatrician..
here hydration is important, dont allow the child to go for dehydration, give WHO ORS in water with frequent sips and sporolac may help..
bye..

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

If a child is feeding poorly for about one month then the child should be examined completely.

What is the current weight of the child?

Is there any significant weight loss?

Is there any history of vomiting?

Are the eyes yellow in color?

Does she have any blood or mucus in the stool?

If there is poor feeding of one month with loose stool complete examination and investigations are required. Just a stool test may not be sufficient.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

The test would be used to determine if she had picked up an infection, either from a bacterial source (salmonella, shigella, etc.) or a parasite such as giardia. It sounds like a good idea since this has been going on for so long.
