Infant Refusing To Eat. Slow Weight Gain. Reason?

Hi doctor,

Greetings from Malaysia.

My girls is 19 months and she has low appetite recently. She refused to open her mouth when I feed her porridge or rice recently. Sometime It takes me more than 40 minutes to feed her porridge.

She used to be a fast eater. However, she has no problem drinking her milk. she took 9 oz per feeding, 3 feedings a day and she is active otherwise.

I wonder why and thinking what is the reason of the change of her eating habits.

What should I do? What can I do?

Should I deworm her?

She has slow weight gain. Her weight is 10kg. is she underweight?

Is it ok to deworm her she is 19 months now. I consulted my paes before and he suggested to deworm after 2year old.

Your kind expert opinion is much appreciated.

thanking you in advance.

Kind regards,

Sharon Yong.

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for your query.

As you have not mentioned the birth weight or earlier weights it is very difficult to say if 10.0 Kg. at 19 month age is alright. In my opinion you should not unnecessarily worry for your daughter and never force feed her. If you try force feeding then she is not going to accept anything. The correct way is to offer her the food at the appropriate time and if she does not eat then remove the plate and again offer after about 20-30 minutes. Never, ever force her to eat.

Deworming will be required if stool routine examination reveals any ova or cyst. Deworming is not going to make your daughter start accepting food.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter all the best.
