Infected Cyst In Mouth. Prescribed Amoxicillin. Swelling In Face And Neck. Normal?
Hi my partner has an infected cyst in his mouth on the lower jaw, we have been to his dentist and we were prescribed amoxillin and metrondazole to take at the same time as the infection is very bad and has caused alot of swelling to his face and neck. He has been taking amoxicillin for 3 days and started taking metrondazole yesterday, but as I said the swelling has not gone down and the infection area has gone rock hard? Is this normal? Please Help

In my personal opinion your antibiotic is not effective on the bacteria that is causing infection. You may need to change the antibiotic to a effective antibiotic which is more effective and able to control the infection. If their is any discharge of pus or any kind of fluid than send it for culture examination. Culture examination helps you in selection of the antibiotic. You may also need a small surgical procedure I & D if the infection is severe and there is abscess formation. It is better to consult a surgeon for further opinion.

Its not normal as an infected cyst can lead to other complications by spreading I would advise you to take an x-ray of the area where the cyst is present , to know the extent of the cyst and rule out the cause for its formation.See your dentist .
This has to be treated by surgical enucleation or marsupilazation which is followed by a course of antibiotic and analgesics.

Reoccurence is common among the cysts of jaws , The above procedures will remove the cystic sac along with its lining from the involved tissue to prevent reoccurence.
Infection to the cysts may lead to formation of abscess , swelling and pain. Abscess if not treated in time may spread to adjacent vital structures and spaces of neck
i suggest you to have antibiotic amoxycillin with clavulate 625mg 2 times daily along with analgesics to subside the swelling and pain till you approach an oral surgeon.

Dental cysts may arise from the periapical lesions of the infected tooth or from the periodontal infection arising from gums or alveolar bone .
Such cysts needs to be treated surgically by enucleation or marsupialization , the procedure remove the cystic lining completely to prevent its reccurence.
Oral medication will give temporary relief and will help in reducing the inflammation , you need to consult an oral surgeon for the treatment.
i would suggest you to get an OPG radiograph done which will show the area of damaged tissue ,involved teeth and the underlying bone , accordingly the cyst is removed surgically.

Get complete mouth scaling and polishing done
Use saline water gargles 3-4 times a day .
Use 0.2% of chlorhexidine mouthwash gargles twice daily .
treatment depends upon the type of cyst , mainly it is drainage of abscess from the infected cyst .
You can take tab Flemiclav 625mg three times a day .

To get it treated you need to get an O.P.G done of associated area.
It also requires biopsy of same region.
Cyst removal is necessary & should be done by marsupilization & enucleation.
It should be followed by antibiotics & analgesics.
