Infection In Both Ears Treated With Antibiotics. Why So Much Of Fluid Is Draining Out With Itching?

Had a double ear infection treated with antibiotics. Left ear would not clear up and felt full. Had tube put in left ear one week ago. Almost nightly, I awake around 3-4 am to a large amount of clear fluid that is draining out of my ears. At first, it itches. And I do mean a lot of fluid - all over my pillow. It is clear, no smell, a little thicker than water. During the day, no drainage and my left ear feels full. Both ears slightly ache. I go in on Wednesday for allergy testing and a follow up with the ENT. But I don't understand why this is happening and why there is so much fluid.f

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
You are suffering from Bilateral Serous Otitis media.
It is usually non infectious condition, thus antibiotics not helps.
But some times upper respiratory tract infection is associated and antibiotics are needed.
You might have either the blockade or malformation in Eustachian tube.
It is a tube which connects the middle ear and our throat.
When this tube is not working properly, it prevents normal drainage of fluid from the middle ear, causing a build up of fluid behind the eardrum.

Your doctor put the Myringotomy tube in left ear to drain this fluid.
It is self limited and will get cleared in 3 to 4 weeks.
Once the fluid is cleared, your doctor will remove the tube.

Nothing to worry about this.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
