Injured Knee. Swollen And Appears To Have Fluid Under The Knee Cap. What To Do?
2 days ago I injured my knee by stepping down off a step and from there, not sure what went wrong. The tendon from my patella to my shin instantly turned bruised, a large knot, swelled, and appeared to be very crooked. I could barely lift my leg, and when walking, had to keep it straight or it would give out. My entire knee is now swollen and appears to have fluid under the knee cap, which is very loose compared to my other knee, and seems to have dropped down. The pain is miserable and is aching all the way up in my thigh, which also seem to hurt as well. I have used Ice, ibuprofen, and the first night and last night I took 1/2 of a hydrocodone I had left from surgery 8 months ago. I am a runner, and have been running since I was 8, and am now 35. I have had previous issues with my knees, but nothing major, other than swelling, popping, cracking, and mild to moderate pain from time to time, which affects how often I can run.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for writing to us
From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Large lump might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood). You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any more concern.
