Hi.my brother and dad were drinking heavily. Which lead to a fist fight,my dad was struck in the face more then a few times. I have iced it every hour for a little bit, and gave him ibuprofen, is there anything else I can do to reduce the swelling of his eyes, cheeks ect.., it has been a little over 15 hours since the fight, is their anything I should be checking that could predict permanent injury?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The swelling in the eyes and cheeks is due to accumulation of fluid or blood (hematoma).
And the pain can be attributed to the inflammatory response due to the injury.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained by taking analgesics and anti inflammatory agents like Ibuprofen, ice compression & adequate rest.
And it is appreciable that you are already following these measures.
The pain and swelling will gradually decrease as the inflammatory response subsides.
But this is a slow process & takes times to disappear completely.

However, if the swelling still persists or associated with symptoms such as high grade fever, vomiting, dizziness, loss of consciousness, convulsions, etc. then it will be better to consult an Orthopedician.
Investigations like X ray of the skull will be needed to detect any fracture & CT scan will be helpful to rule out any intra cranial injury.

There is no need to worry, he will be fine.

Wishing him a good health.
Thanks & take care.
