Inner Eyelid Peeling, Sloughed Skin Balling Up, Fiery Red Eye, Bruised Looking, Painful. Suggestions?

I thought I had an especially sticky matter forming in my eye, but after looking at it closer I can see that it is the inside of my eyelid peeling and the sloughed skin balling up. My eye is fiery red and my eyelid is swollen and bruised looking inside and out. It hurts but I am more scared about lasting effects to my vision than I am concerned about pain. Why is my eye doing this?

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

The symptoms you are experiencing may be a sign of conjunctivitis.

The inside of your eyelids and the front surface of your eyeball is covered by a layer called the conjunctiva. When this is infected and inflamed, the eye can look angry and red and the eyelids can also appear swollen.

You may have had an episode of bacterial conjunctivitis initially when your eye was sticky and then later developed viral conjunctivitis which can take longer to clear up.

The best thing to do is to see your eye doctor and rule out anything more serious. They may take swabs from your eyes to investigate the cause. If it is conjunctivitis, your doctor may offer you antibiotic drops/ointment initially or symptomatic treatment if it is most likely viral in origin. Conjunctivitis does not usually leave any lasting damage so don't worry too much but do get it looked at.

Regards
