Irregular Periods. Spotting While On Birth Control. Chances Of Pregnancy?

So I have a three month supply of birth control. I only have my period every three months. And yes, I am sexually active. It's with the same amazing guy that I've been with for almost three years now. Last night I took my first pill thats just a reminder to help me keep track of how many days im on my period. This morning, I've only had the tinniest bit of bleeding. which is unusual, this is my third package of these pills. The package says that if you don't have a period while taking these fillers that I may be pregnant.. I'm only 16 and couldn't handle that... So, I'm feeling a little bit of cramping but I'm still paranoid of the pregnancy thing. Should I worry?

Hi

The periods can become irregular for first few days of pills. It is better to wait for some time. It is also possible that you may start getting periods every month when on the pills. To rule out pregnancy you can go for urine or blood pregnancy test. Urine pregnancy test kits are available over the counter at most pharmacies.

General & Family Physician Dr. Shoaib Khan's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

Birth control pills are listed as a cause for bleeding between menstrual cycles, so do not worry about this.

But in all cases, if there is a suspicion for pregnancy, it should always be ruled out. Take a home pregnancy test, which should be conducted 2 weeks after your last sexual contact or on the first or second day of a missed period. An early morning urine sample would yield a most accurate result.

You might have to repeat the test 2-3 times to get a confirmed result. Once pregnancy is ruled out, birth control can be the only other cause on the list taking your history into consideration, but its always better to consult a doctor.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications at: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-shoaib-khan/64581 . I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
