Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is 84/44 Pressure With 48 Pulse Too Low In A 70 Year Old Diabetic Female?
I am a 70 year old female. I am diabetic and have atrildefib. I name recently had a steroid shot in my spine. I take two types of blood pressure medicine. My blood pressure is running low 84/44 pulse is 48. Is this too low. Should I take my sotolol blood pressure med or wait until morning and take my vitals again.
Thanks for the query. As an absolute rule, we usually consider low blood pressure when the upper number is below 90, like in your case 84. We used to be more stringent with the blood pressure goals, but now we know that your goal blood pressure should be below 150/90, and probably higher than 90/50, since this is the point were many patients develop symptoms related to low blood pressure. Sotalol is for your atrial fibrillation, not much for blood pressure. So if you are on other blood pressure meds, I encourage you to discuss with your prescribing provider, as it is likely that you would be able to come off some of them and recheck numbers and response. However, dont discontinue any medications without first consulting with your prescriber first.
Hope that helps, wish you the best,
