Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My formulary is changing and I face a huge potential expense in the donut hole that I m trying to mitigate which might have me choosing between Advair (which I took for years) and Symbicort (that I m now taking). Is there a medical advantage or a cost advantage to consider. I take some medications that are driving costs through the roof including ZetiaTabs (also taking Lovastatin), Lialda (replacing Asacol which is no longer covered) and either Advair or Symbicort.
Yes, symbicort may be taken in place of advair. Symbicort consists of a combination of steroid (budesonide) and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (formoterol). Whereas advair consists of a combination of steroid (fluticasone) and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (salmeterol).
These two drugs used in the form of inhaler and commonly prescribed for maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and treatment of asthma. Both drugs have similar compositions and are equally effective for the maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and treatment of asthma. However, symbicort is slightly less expensive than the advair.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
