Is Amantadine Effective In The Treatment Of A Head Injury?

My sister has severe head trauma and was having sub ( I can t think of the correct word) but mild seizures afterwards and her neurosurgeon is trying Amlantadine. He said it could possibly wake her brain up....This medication seems to be for Parkinson Disease? Is it also used for other conditions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Amantidine is an anti-viral drug but it is used more for Parkinson's disease because of its Dopaminergic activities (dopamine activates some parts of the brain). Though there is no indication of it to be used after trauma or for subdural hematoma, but your doctor might have used it for its dopaminergic action.

Hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
