Is Anti-Rabies Vaccine Different From Equine Vaccine?

May I ask what is the difference between Anti Rabies Vaccine and Equine Vaccine. My son got bitten by our pet doc in the face last night. Its just a small dots of wound though. And is it necessary to have my child vaccinated anti tetanus also? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, welcome to HMC. I really appreciate your concern about the situation you are facing. As a physician I want to tell you that Rabies is a dangerous disease.

as you said your son was bitten on face, so according to guideline your son has to take Equine rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG) as well as Anti-rabies vaccination as the bite wound according to site and your description comes under Category-II Bite. Also your son should get Tetanus shot.

I also want to assure you that there is no danger to you son's health if these above said vaccines are initiated within 72 hours after bite. Also i want you to suggest to get your dog Vaccinize regularly to avoid instances like these in future.

Hope this helps, Let me know for any queries.

Regards,
Dr.Abhijeet
