Is Aspirin Safe To Be Taken While Treating Shingles?

Is it safe to take asprin when you have shingles? My 96 yr old mother has just developed a shingles rash over the last 24 hrs and she generally takes 2 extra strength excedrin qAM for arthritis; she gets no relief from tylenol or motrin for that. We do have oxycodone for her but I am concerned re: ASA use in a viral infection - does this matter in an older adult?

Hello,

Aspirin drug should not be a problem in an older adult with a viral infection. That is something we are careful about in children.

So, you could definitely try out aspirin. Additionally, try using Diclofenac or Metacin medicine. It is a painful rash but it does subside gradually.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
