Hi & Welcome.
1.
Diabetes should be ruled out
2. It could be due to side effect of
Chlorthalidone.
I can understand your concern regarding the safety of the prescribed medication.
The medication
Atenolol (beta1-selective blocker) & Chlorthalidone (diuretic or "water pill") is an effective combination commonly prescribed for the treatment of
high blood pressure (
hypertension).
The most common side effects of Atenolol include decreased heart beats, fatigue, sleep disturbances, difficulty in breathing in patients with air way diseases, etc. It is unlikely to cause excessive thirst and dryness of mouth.
Chlorthalidone is a "water pill" (diuretic) & causes your body to get rid of extra salt and water through kidneys. This effect may increase the amount of urine you make when you first start the medication. In some cases, it may cause a serious loss of body water (
dehydration) & salt which can result in excessive thirst, dryness of mouth,
muscle cramps or weakness.
In view of the above, I therefore advise you to consult your treating physician to
1. Review the prescription and to prescribe an alternate effective but a safer medication to lower your high blood pressure and
2. To rule out the possibility of diabetes as these symptoms can also occur in the setting of diabetes.
Hope the advice given above would help you.
