Is Azithromycin Advisable For An Infant With Whooping Cough?
Hello, my 4 month old baby has the symptoms of pertussis (whooping cough) so I took him to the ER and while in the hospital they did the testing and we are waiting to hear back for the results, but in the mean time they prescribed him 3.5 ml of AZITHROMYCIN for 5 days to take one time daily.. It seems like its a lot. I cannot get a hold of his doctor, is it safe to give it to him?? I would really appreciate your response.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sandhya's Response
Hello!
Azithromycin is used in upper respiratory tract infections including pertussis (whooping cough). It is given at a dose of 10 mg/kg orally once a day for 5 days from 1 to 5 months of age. Some of the things you could try at home are let the baby get plenty of rest, feed regularly to prevent dehydration, keep the air free of any irritants like smoke or fumes, wash your hands thoroughly and wear a mask when around the baby. Hope this helps.
