Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can you take a benedryl after a mild concussion? The CT was negative- laceration on the back of the head with 5 staples; she denied pain meds but has had some relief with ibuprofen- we will request pain meds from the PCP in the am as the ibuprofen doesn t see to be enough at this time; zofran was given for nausea but she takes benedryl at night for allergies however the ER physician recommended sleeping for more than 2 hours at a time throughout tonight. Will benedryl be safe at this point?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
CT does not show possibility of concussion as per your statement. Sleep / drowsiness is side effect of Benadryl. It is not a sleeping pill. In my view, Benadryl in minimal dosage should be fine to have some psychological relaxation. Still, I would strongly suggest a cross check with treating doctor, who knows her health facts in detail.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
