Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has been taking ceftin (cefuroxime axetil) and Prednisone. He has 1 ceftin pill left, but horrible heartburn. It wakes him up at night and it causes pain. He has Nexium here for when his acid reflux is bad. Some sites say that Nexium can cause the ceftin to not work as well. Since he is taking his last dose of ceftin this morning, is it okay to take a Nexium at the same time?
There is a significant risk of the nexium decreasing the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
He may want to consider using a temporary alternative such as tums to help decrease the reflux for this evening then restart the nexium after this. It is possible that the reflux may decrease after completing the prednisolone since this is known to cause gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach)
I hope this helps
