Is Cephalexin Advisable After Suffering Allergic Reaction To Amoxicillin?
Hi, I had a mild reaction to Amoxicillin about 12 months ago (itchy swollen hand that resolved with antithistamines) and now have been prescribed Cephalexin 500mg twice daily for a UTI. Am I likely to have a reaction to the Cephalexin? Alternatively I do have a repeat script for Doxycycline should I need it (I have rosacea) would I be better to use the Doxy rather than try the Cephalexin?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns...
As per your complain amoxicillin is a Penicillin group of antibiotic while Cephalexin is a Cephalosporin and Doxycycline is a Tetracycline... Therefore all the three of these belongs to different group of antibiotics and in case if amoxicillin caused allergic reaction, it is not necessary that Cephalexin will also cause the same as it belongs to a different group.. You can very much take Cephalexin for your urinary tract infection and it will not necessarily cause allergy.. But in case you have already taken Doxycycline in the past with no allergic reaction, you can also take it for your present infection as it is also caused by bacteria..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
