Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Allegra usually works for me, but it is not getting the job done this spring. If I change from allegra to either Claritin or Zyrtec in the middle of the pollen season, is there: a. any risk with having both drugs in my body simultaneously for a short period, and b. is there any loss of effectiveness until the replacement has been in my system for a while? YYYY@YYYY
Hi & Welcome. It's not safe to take these two medications together.
Taking these two of near-identical, long-acting new generations antihistamines is not going to be the magic solution to your seasonal allergy due to pollens.
If you take both the medications together, an increase in dizziness, increased heart beats, dryness as well as excessive drowsiness which may result in falls and related injuries.
Instead you should consult your doctor for an alternate effective but a safer treatment like a mast-cell stabilizer (Montelukast) or nasal corticosteroid sprays.
Hope the advice given above would useful in getting rid of seasonal allergy. Best regards. A feed back is appreciated.
