Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the case of 16 yrs old male with gynecomastia.
Yes,
Clomiphene is the right medication to treat
pubertal gynecomastia.
At puberty some boys produce slightly higher amounts of female hormones known as estrogens. As a result of this an imbalance between male hormones (androgens) and female hormones (estrogens) occurs and the female body characteristics like breasts (gynecomastia)and other bodily and physiological features develop in males.
Absence of beard and moustache, small penis and poor muscular development occurs because of low levels of male hormones.
Clomiphene citrate which is mainly used in the treatment of
female infertility because of its ovulation stimulation effect is also found to be useful in reducing the high levels of estrogens in males as in case of pubertal gynecomastia, hence it is used.
Tamoxifen (basically used in the treatment of
breast cancer) is another drug which has similar actions as that of Clomiphene is also used in the treatment of pubertal
gynaecomastia.
The side effects of Climiphene in males include rash, nausea or visual disturbances.
Hope this answers your query.
A feed back is appreciated.
