Is Cyproterone Advisable For Acne During Pregnancy?
I have severe acne ; but can no longer take accutane because we are going to try for a baby - I was prescribed cyproterone but later told not to take it if trying for pregnancy. Can I take it?? Is it safe or is there a safe but effective alternative? I m also using topical accutane (retrieve cream) Your help is appreciated ,the Thankyou!
Both cyproterone and accutane are not advisable for acne during pregnancy.
Cyproterone is an anti-androgen commonly prescribed in the treatment of severe acne and hirsutism in females.
Accutane (isotretinoin) is a vitamin A formulation also found to be useful for acne.
Because of their harmful effects on the growing fetus, these medicines are absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy or those females who are trying for pregnancy.
I would recommend antibiotics containing creams such as clindamycin or azithromycin which are effective alternatives and are considered to be safe during pregnancy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
