Is Dexilant The Right Medicine For Acid Reflux?

I m having to switch from taking Esomeprazole to Dexilant. I had severe acid reflux several years ago, as well as enlarged hital (sp) hernia. At the time I aspirated and almost died. My question is, will Dexilant be as efficient as Esomeprazole? Also are there any side effects that are harmful. I m 81 years of age & have high blood pressure, as well as asthma. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Dexilant is a drug that belongs to the same class of drugs as Esomeprazole, meaning that the mechanism of action is similar, therefore the substitution should work fine for you.
As with all drugs, side effects are something to be expected. The most common are diarrhea, itching and a rash, and occasionally dizziness. If you experience any of these, stop the medication and notify your doctor as soon as you can.

Wishing you all the best.
