Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Dofetilide An Effective Alternative To Tikosyn?
My Part D prescription drug plan will no longer cover Tikosyn in 2017. Is there a risk that the generic replacement, Dofetilide (@ $1560/yr), will not work effectively? If it doesn t, Tikosyn is no longer in the formulary so the annual cost for it will be $21,000. I can choose a plan that does include Tikosyn for $4900/yr. but I fear they may drop it also in 2017 and I ll have to pay extra for Dofetilide under that plan (and still be at risk of failure). Is there a significant risk that the generic version won t work (it is fairly new)?
I'd like you to understand that generic versions are cheaper so your insurance company has approved it instead of the brand Tikosyn. But it certainly does not mean that the generic version is not effective.
Actually, generic drugs are only cheaper because the manufacturers have not had the expenses of developing and marketing a new drug. The FDA also makes sure that generic drugs are as safe and effective as brand-name drugs before allowing them to be marketed. So don't worry and continue with the generic Dofetilide.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
