Dear Doctor I am pregnant for 1 month and doctor suggested to take duphastone every morning after break fast,I didnt started taking this medicine as I read some bad news about this medicine,It will be great if you can help here. I am 28 years of age detected with PCOS one year before.
Progesterone in general is not approved for use during pregnancy in any advanced country such as US, UK etc. Some authorities in the past used to recommend its use in recurrent miscarriage or threatened abortion but now there is now no evidence of any benefit from such practice and recommend against the use in early pregnancy unless there is proven deficiency.
One problem with this medicine is that female baby may suffer from hirsutism (unwanted hair on face, chest etc). Therefore if at all progesterones have to be given when there is documented deficiency, it is preferable to give dydrogesterone (sold as Duphaston) which your doctor has prescribed or medroxyprogesterone (sold as Meprate).
Since you are suffering from PCOS, it is better to take duphastone tablets and it is comparatively safe in pregnancy. Most of obstetricians advice these tablets if patient is having PCOS.
