Is EECP A Safe Procedure For The Treatment Of A Heart Disease?

Recently, i have heard about E.E.C.P. (Enhanced External Counter Pulsation) treatment in Kerala for curing heart disease without any angiogram or angioplasty or bye pass surgery. It is also cost effective & non-surgical. It is approved by USFDA. Some of the hospitals & clinics in Kerala have this treatment facility right now & it is done at an affordable fees. But majority of the doctors remains silent about this treatment , even if they know it and they don t promote it as it affects their profession. What s your opinion in this regard. Your honest reply is always welcomed.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This is a very interesting question. However to be honest there is no clear cut answer yet to this question, there is some date from few studies that suggest that for blocked coronary arteries ( angina ) EECP can be pretty effective , and a lot of people have reported good effect in reducing the chest pain and improvement in quality of life , this is even more better for person who have heart failure besides angina. So I would say, yes there is reasonable evidence fro the effectiveness of this therapy and that is why its being more accepted across the globe , as u said approved by us FDA. Giving it a try in a selected patient would not be a bad idea in my opinion. However, after saying still there is some debate about its effectiveness. But from what I understand, yes it may be effective but it is not an alternative to bypass surgery, which has a lot of evidence on its back. So to cut it short , it may be a reasonable option for some patients fro chest pain but not an alternative to most of the other cardiac therapies, still it is more and more accepted.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
