Hi, my husband is suffering from chronic kidney disease(IgA nephropathy) and is at an eGFR of 9.he is doing ok considering his advanced stage of disease but for the first time his haemoglobin level has fallen to 89.he is not on dialysis as yet but the nephrologist wants to start the EPO shots on him for increasing the hb levels.Am trying to determine if it is safe as he is to go in for a procedure to drain his thyroid gland cyst which is quite large but not malignant according to his endocrinologist. Is EPO safe in this situation?
If it is just a draining procedure then i would not assume any problems and you can go ahead with the procedure but if it is very invasive then you must get a cardiac anesthetist fitness. Also you must understand with so many problems with kidney the risk is always high so be careful. The EPO shots do not have any direct bearing on the thyroid problem.
Hope this helps
