Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Erythromycin The Right Medicine For Itchiness In The Eyelid?
I have a very itchy right eyelid, top and bottom. Eye is runny, eyelid inflamed and red on outside only. no bump. Minute clinic gave me erythromycin ointment with instructions to use it 3 times a day for 3 days. It is not better, and may be worse. She called it blepharitis.
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to eradicate infections caused by susceptible bacteria, it is not useful to treat just itchiness in the eyelid.
Based on history you seem to be not responding to erythromycin ointment so you need to consult your doctor for a suitable oral antibiotic like cloxacillin or clindamycin along with a non-steroidal drug like aceclofenac.
The underlying cause of blepharitis if any should be detected and treated accordingly.
Treatments for underlying conditions. Blepharitis caused by seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea or other diseases may be controlled by treating the underlying disease.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
