Is Ferritin Being 33 With Intense Depression A Cause For Concern?

I have been feeling weak, dealing with a lot of grief in past year, sadness and intense depression. I had a blood test today and the results are already in. My ferritin is only 33. Is that cause for concern? I am 39 and otherwise healthy. Is there anything to do but take iron supplements? I haven t been eating super well, as in not enough, not as in unhealthy. I try to make a shake often enough that consists of coconut milk, almond butter, flax seeds, kale, berries and a banana. On set I eat the healthy options. Please only answer if this is free. Thanks, Melanie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
dear Ms Melanie
your ferritin level is within the normal range for females which is 11-306 ng/mL

there is no co relation between depression and serum ferritin levels
if the depression you are telling us about has been for a long duration may be you have not paid adequate attention towards your nutrition and specifically consuming iron rich food which may have resulted in low normal ferritin level
if you are not suffering from anaemia that is low Hb levels then please look after ways and medication to counter your depression and revert to healthy eating with plenty of exercise
by the way plenty of physical exercise and a balance diet is one of the good medication for depression though very seldom followed
I find this answer helpful
