Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yesterday I was diagnosed with HSV. I am awaiting the results of the swab test to determine if it s 1 or 2. My question is this..I am 44 years old, divorced mother of 3.I have been in a monogamous relationship for 18 months. My boyfriend has been faithful. I have never had an outbreak of herpes until this week. It is severe and in my genitals. Could I have been a carrier of Herpes from a previous relationship and not have known it bc I didn t have any symptoms. Or could he have carried it and not known it? My previous boyfriend had hsv1. Could I have acquired the virus from him and not known it?? I have had periods of itching and soreness before but never had an outbreak so I assumed it was a yeast infection. I am absolutely devastated and trying to figure out why the outbreak happened now. Help!!
HSV1 infections are very contagious. They can be passed from person to person even if no symptoms are present. It is possible to have obtained it from your boyfriend even if it is dormant in his system from a previous cold sore infection. It is more than likely that you caught it from the previous boyfriend who was positive for HSV1 and you didn't realize you contracted it. Yes, it is possible the rash you thought was a yeast infection was a herpes outbreak.
I don't know how good of a look you had at it. But yeast infections have a distinctive foul odor. Treat your infection and avoid contaminating your boyfriend if that hasn't happened already. Blame the previous boyfriend for the state you are in. The virus lays dormant in the nerves until stress or an infection brings it out and then you may get blisters.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
