Is Imuran 50mg Right Medication For Borderline RA?

Hello Dr. I was recently diagnosed borderline RA, I also have hashimoto s thyroditis which is stable without meds and panic attacks which I take Klonopin for. My rheumatologist tried me on plaquenil which I felt terrible on then we moved to methotrexate starting from 2.5 once a week until 10 mg and had 0 appetite so, he changed my med to Imuran. I just started 50 mg of Imuran and was wondering if I am borderline why do I need these heavy meds for the RA?

Hi,

Imuran (azathioprine) is an immunosuppressive medication that is often used to treat autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It works by suppressing the immune system and preventing it from attacking healthy tissues.

Borderline RA is a term used to describe early RA, where the symptoms and blood tests indicate the possibility of RA, but the diagnosis is not yet confirmed. Treatment of borderline RA is usually aimed at preventing or delaying the progression of the disease, and this can involve medications like DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) such as methotrexate or Imuran. These medications can help reduce inflammation, pain, and joint damage associated with RA.

While these medications can have side effects, they can also be effective in managing the symptoms of RA and improving the quality of life of patients. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of any medication with your doctor and to report any side effects you may experience. It is also important to follow your doctor's instructions and not stop or change your medication without consulting with them first.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
