I saw an emergency room doctor for a severe gout attack that caused swelling in the foot and ankle. I was given two injections 1) a Steroid 2) anti inflamatory drug. He then prescribed Indomethacin, 21 pills, 50mg 3 times a day for 7 days. I am 77 years old, the pharmacist told me this prescription carries a high risk warning for my age. An acute attack of gout needs two types of treatment:
1. Acute flare control comprising of colchicine and NSAIDs, keeping in mind the cardiovascuolar and renal profile of the patient.
2. Long term control comprising of a drug which either reduces the formation of uric acid or increases uric acid secretion.

Indomethacin is a relatively safer drug as compared to other NSAIDs, but considering its large dose, it may have an effect on your renal as well as cardiac system
