Is Iodine Present In Injectafer Causing Allergy To A 21 Year Old?

My 21 year old daughter just has an allergic reaction to her first infusion of Injectafer . Apparently it s an allergic reaction to iodine... Questions: 1. I cold not find any info about what s in Injectafer? Is there Iodine in it? 2. If yes, how is it different than the ones she takes oral iodine in her multivitamins?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Injectafer is chemically ferric carboxymaltose. In other words it's an iron supplement and not iodine. It is given to people who have iron deficiency anemia after taking into consideration her blood hemoglobin level. Some people exhibit allergic reaction to injectable form of iron and it is not rare and not to be concerned about. In such people generally oral iron tablets or supplements are prescribed. She might rarely require blood transfusion depending on her hemoglobin level to bring her hemoglobin back to normal.
