Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Iodoral Supplement Intake Safe With History Of Iodine Dye Allergy?
I am a 67 yo male. When I was around 14 yo I had some type of procedure in the hospital and afterward my mother told me that I was allergic to iodine dye. So I ve repeated this since then. However, I can put iodine on my skin with no problems. Do you think I can take iodoral 12.5 mg tablets (increasing from 1 to possibly 4 tablets daily) without a reaction? I have hypothyroid for which I take .015 mg Synthroid daily for years. I ve had symptoms lately including sensitivity to cold and heat intolerance. My recent TSH dropped to .61 (usually around 1.5). My FreeT4 is 1.4. I think Iodoral supplement will help. Do you think it s safe for me to try?
As per my clinical experience, Iodoral supplement is one of the strongest iodine supplement used in various thyroid disorders of iodine deficiency. The usual use of Iodoral is in cases of: - Preparation for surgery of thyroid removal - Severe deficiency, not responding to conventional highest dose of thyroid medications - Offset the damaging effects of radiation
There is strict contraindication for this supplement with history of iodine dye allergy. As even minor to major anaphylactic reactions are possible with smallest dose of Iodoral supplement. It is not recommended to try the tablet without consulting your endocrinologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.
