Hi. I got my medical result today and found out that I have Koch s infection RULF Category D. I was actually excited to go to work tomorrow since I just got a new job. I was told that I am not fit for employment. Can you pls tell me what that means and would that be curable?? Thanks.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Koch's disease is infection with bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Koch's disease is commonly called tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease and is curable with appropriate anti-tubercular treatment (ATT). ATT is long treatment lasting fro 6-12 months. The success of treatment depends on appropriate dosage and regular drug intake. The person affected with tuberculosis is infectious initially thus you have been declared unfit for joining new job since you can pass on the infection to other individuals. A regular ATT for at-least one month will make you non-infectious. I suggest you to consult your treating doctor for more information regarding ATT Initially intake of ATT may be associated with some side effects thus it has to be taken under direct supervision of your doctor.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
