Is Lasix Advisable For Swelling In The Feet And Productive Cough?

My husband has swelling of his feet, and a productive cough. He was recently treated (about 6 weeks ago) for pneumonia, which had been misdiagnosed for about 2 months. Sometimes, he feels like he has difficulty breathing, particularly at night or early morning. He has taken Lasix and this helps both his feet and his breathing. He had a triple bypass 4 years ago, and is a smoker. I feel like we are treating the symptom and not the cause. Ideas? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that he has an element of heart failure that may be causing shortness of breath , swelling and cough.

Fluid build up in the lungs can occur in heart failure and this can cause shortness of breath and coughing, the lasix helps to get rid of this excess fluid.

You may want to consider speaking to his doctor to find out if he has heart failure.

I hope this helps
