Is Lipitor 20mg Recommended For A Person With Cholesterol Level Of 236?

I have a cholesterol level today of 236 and my primary Dr wants to put me on Lipitor ( generic ) 20 mg ........ never have had heart attack, am 70 yr old and in very good health take 1 losarton for blood pressure! Any help in deciding if this is forme? haredew10 @hotmail.com

Lipitor is composed of 'atorvastatin', which belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins."
Atorvastatin reduces levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).
Hence, Lipitor is used to treat high cholesterol levels in blood.

Cholesterol (total) level with 236 mg/dl is definitely higher than normal. It is desirable to be below 180 mg/dl.

Kindly take the medication as prescribed and do the necessary follow-up as advised by your doctor.
