Is Lisinopril Better Than Atenolol In Treating High BP?
I am on licinopril 40 mgs qd- my bp fluctuates around 140-149 over 82-89. My dr says this is the new norm for bp. I used to take atenolol 25 mgs qd and felt much better. My bp was around 117/77. But she won t put me back on it saying it does not allow enough protection for my heart. I m concerned my bp is just too high on the licinopril. I am 55 yo and in fairly good health. Would you recommend atenalol?
Thank you for using Healthcare magic My name is Dr Astrit Ceka and i am a Cardiology resident. Your concern is right. According to JNC-8 for your age blood pressure should be less than 140/90. With that in mind as you said licinopril 40mg isn't up to the task (your systolic bp is 140-149). Licinopril is an ACE inhibitor and one of the first choice drug for lowering blood pressure. It is wildly used and causes little side effects. On the other hand Atenolol is a selective Beta blocker and its main effects are lowering of heart rate and also blood pressure. In my opinion, you should use Atenolol because of its heart protective effect and it keeps your bp in its optimal range. It would be very helpful if you can give me additional information on your heart rate, if you smoke or drink and if you have blood relatives who suffer from heart disese. I hope my answer was helpful. Feel free to ask again
