Is Losartan HCTZ The Right Medicine For Hypertension?

What is the best hypertension drug for patients with low gfr (17)? I am taking Losartan-hctz 100/12.5mg currently. The site says in rare cases it can cause kidney failure: In rare cases, hydrochlorothiazide and losartan can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Hello,

The adverse kidney effects of HCTZ/Losartan are extremely rare. However, in patients with reduced kidney function, the anti-hypertensive of choice is ACE (Angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors like Captopril, Enalapril etc. The ACE inhibitors reduce blood pressure along with the added benefit of reno-protective effect.

Losartan can also be considered to be a second choice next to ACE inhibitors. Please discuss the need for reconsidering the antihypertensives with your treating physician.
