Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi my name is Melissa. My grandmother died of Lou Gherigs when I was a child. What are the chances I may have it or my children? And if I or my children do have it is there anything that we can do like stem cell implantation that can prevent the traumatizing and debilatating disease from taking any of us before our time as I witnessed myself and has affected my entire life.
Hello Welcome to HCM. I understand your concerns. Lou Gehrig's disease is inheritable. 90% of cases are spiradic but 10% cases are familial. It is extremely difficult to predict the pattern and chances of inheritance. There are no common tests to predict the rate of inheritance. Unfortunately, there are no established prophylactic as well as curative treatments for this disease. I would advise you to not worry about whether the disease will happen to any of the family member or not. I say so because there are no ways by which you can prevent or treat it.
Thanks.
