Is MRI Advisable While Suffering From Swelling And Fluid Retention In Knee?

my 42 year old son has developed some fluid on his left knee...He is about 6 ft. 2 inches and 240 lbs...He walks around 5 miles with his security job. ..and may not have the best shoes for that. His doctor told him this morning that it might be related to a cartilage problems and that he needed an MRI...His wife iced it down last night and the swelling had decreased this morning. The doctor had scheduled an MRI for 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. My son called to cancel so he had time to look into the cost with his insurance and perhaps even getting a second opinion...The first doctor that surgery may be necessary so wanted the MRI done...My son found out that they can hold the MRI order for one month if my son changes his mind. Should my son get a second opinion or is the MRI the best and only choice...regardless of the cost? Thanks for your help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
dear friend
MRI will give a clear picture as what is wrong in his knee and if there is need for surgery or not
however since it is not a life threatening situation delay will not harm.
your sons BMI is 30 plus which is in the obese category
weight reduction with a strict diet to take load off the knees will go a long way in may be resolving the situation
use of a knee cap and occasional use of OTC pain killers till he gets his weight down may help a lot
doing quadriceps muscle exercise and strengthning the muscles of thigh and calf too will add to the benefit
